Federal Cabinet Approves Elevation and Service Extensions

In a significant development, the federal government has approved the elevation of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal. The decision was made during a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Additionally, the cabinet has extended the service tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, recognizing his continued role in maintaining Pakistan’s aerial defence capabilities.

The government acknowledged the outstanding leadership displayed by General Asim Munir during Operation Bunyan-un-Mursoos (Iron Wall), which was launched in response to India’s unprovoked aggression on the night of May 6–7, 2025.

The cabinet lauded his brilliant strategic planning and courageous command that not only ensured national security but also inflicted a decisive blow to the adversary.

Cabinet Condemns Indian Aggression

The federal cabinet strongly condemned India’s unprovoked war against Pakistan, citing deliberate targeting of civilians and attempts to breach Pakistan’s sovereignty. The meeting highlighted the country’s resolve to defend its territorial integrity at all costs.

General Asim Munir Promoted to Field Marshal

In recognition of his exemplary leadership, valour, and unwavering commitment to national defence, the cabinet unanimously approved the promotion of General Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal — the highest rank in the Pakistan Army.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also held a separate meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari to brief him on the promotion and related national security matters.

The cabinet further decided to honour officers and soldiers of the Pakistan Armed Forces, along with civilians who made significant contributions during the operation, with top state awards.

This move aims to recognise and appreciate their sacrifices and dedication during one of the most challenging episodes in Pakistan’s recent history.

Field Marshal Asim Munir Responds with Gratitude

According to a statement from Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Asim Munir expressed his deep gratitude to Almighty Allah and dedicated the honour to the entire nation, especially to the martyrs, veterans, and members of the Armed Forces.

“This honour is a national trust,” he stated. “Even millions of Asims could be sacrificed to uphold it. This is not a personal recognition, but a tribute to the Pakistan Army and the entire nation.”

The escalation stemmed from heightened tensions following last month’s Pahalgam attack, leading to Indian airstrikes on civilian areas in Punjab and Azad Kashmir, resulting in heavy casualties.

In response, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-un-Mursoos, targeting key Indian military installations. Highlights of the operation include:

Following intense diplomatic efforts, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Pakistan and India had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire after a prolonged night of mediated talks.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), President Trump confirmed:

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that Pakistan and India have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire.”

Military De-escalation Agreement

Subsequently, Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both nations conducted multiple rounds of dialogue. They agreed to gradually return forces to peacetime positions in several phases, with a deadline set for May 30 to complete the de-escalation process.
